Conversion Rate Optimisation: Why Your Store Gets Traffic But Few Sales

A store doing 8,000 sessions a month and thirty orders has a problem, but it is not obvious which one. The instinct is to redesign the site. More often the fault sits somewhere narrower, and a redesign buries it under new problems.

Conversion rate optimisation is really just the discipline of working through the funnel in order until you find it.

Check the traffic before you blame the page

Conversion rate is a ratio, and the numerator is not the only thing that moves it. If a large share of sessions come from broad interest campaigns, discount-code searches or an audience outside your delivery area, the pages may be fine and the traffic may be wrong.

Segment by source before anything else. A 0.4 per cent overall rate that turns out to be 2 per cent from search and 0.1 per cent from a poorly targeted social campaign is a media problem, not a design problem.

The product page has about ten seconds

Most product pages lose people on questions that are cheap to answer. What will delivery cost me, when will it arrive, will this fit, and what happens if it does not.

Singapore shoppers are used to fast fulfilment and clear returns terms. Burying delivery timelines in a separate policy page, or leaving sizing and specification vague, pushes people back to search rather than forward to the cart.

Where conversion rate optimisation usually pays back fastest

Checkout abandonment is often mechanical rather than emotional. Forcing account creation, asking for information you do not need, hiding shipping cost until the final step, or offering a narrow set of payment options will each cost you orders.

Local payment preferences are worth checking rather than assuming. So is the mobile experience, since a store can look tidy on a laptop and be close to unusable on a phone in one hand on the MRT.

Let the data narrow it down

Before changing anything, look at where sessions end. A funnel report showing the drop between product view, add to cart, checkout start and purchase will usually point to one stage carrying most of the loss. Session recordings and on-site search terms fill in why.

Then change one thing at a time. Redesigning the product page, the cart and the checkout in the same sprint leaves you unable to say what worked.

Fixing in order

The sequence that tends to work is: correct the traffic mix, answer the delivery and returns questions clearly, remove checkout friction, and only then look at layout and visual design. It is less satisfying than a rebuild, and usually cheaper.

Four Media works on e-commerce solutions including store development, conversion rate optimisation and payment gateway integration, which means these questions tend to get looked at together rather than in isolation. If your store is busy but quiet at checkout, we are happy to talk it through.
