Six Public Relations Mistakes Singapore SMEs Make, and What to Do Instead

Public relations tends to get attention in two situations: when a company wants coverage for something it is proud of, and when something has gone wrong. Both are difficult moments to start from.

These are the patterns that come up most often, and what usually works better.

Treating PR as an announcement channel

A steady stream of company news with no reason for anyone outside the company to care will not build credibility. PR works when it puts a useful point of view into circulation, which sometimes means commenting on an industry issue rather than talking about yourself.

Instead, decide what your company is worth listening to on, then build a small number of things to say about it well.

Writing the release for the boss

Press releases full of internal language, unsupported superlatives and quotes that say nothing get filed rather than read. If the quote could be attributed to any executive at any company, it is not doing work.

Instead, write the release around what a reader in that publication would find new, and keep the quote to something only your company could say.

Approaching media with no reason to care

Sending the same pitch to fifty journalists is efficient and largely ineffective. Editors cover a beat, and a pitch that does not fit it gets deleted regardless of how well written it is.

Instead, build a shorter list of relevant contacts, read what they have actually published recently, and pitch something that fits.

Having nobody prepared to speak

Opportunities arrive with short deadlines. If no one is briefed, available and comfortable being quoted, the opportunity goes to a competitor who is.

Instead, agree who speaks for the company on which topics, and make sure they have practised before the first real interview rather than during it.

Waiting for a crisis to think about reputation

Crisis communication improvised under pressure tends to be slow, defensive and inconsistent across channels. The cost is usually higher than the original problem.

Instead, prepare a short plan while nothing is wrong: who is informed, who approves statements, who responds publicly, and how quickly. It does not need to be elaborate to be useful.

Measuring PR by clippings alone

A stack of mentions is not an outcome. Coverage in a publication your buyers do not read is worth less than a single well-placed piece they do.

Instead, track the things that follow coverage: search interest in your brand, referral traffic, inbound enquiries, and whether sales conversations start warmer. Four Media supports clients with press releases, media relations, reputation management and crisis communication, including the preparation that happens before any of it is needed.
